Alternative to Stripe Smart Retries for unpaid invoices — Syntharra
Stripe Smart Retries handles failed card-on-file payments — typically subscriptions or saved-card transactions. If you have it enabled and still have unpaid invoices accumulating, the gap is structural: Smart Retries can only retry charges where there is a card to retry.
Why people search for an alternative
- Smart Retries assumes a card is on file. Manual-pay invoices, where the customer is supposed to log in and pay the link themselves, have nothing for Stripe to retry.
- The 38 percent recovery rate Stripe publishes is real but it is measured on failed-card events, not on overall invoice non-payment.
- There is no escalation channel — failed retries just keep retrying, then eventually give up. No phone call, no SMS, no human follow-up loop.
- If you stopped subscriptions and shifted to one-time invoicing, Smart Retries does not apply at all on those invoices.
What Syntharra replaces — and what it does not
You should not replace Smart Retries — it is free, automatic, and effective for what it does. Add Syntharra for the invoices that are not on auto-charge. We make the call on day 3 past due, send the SMS payment link (which is a hosted Stripe Checkout URL — funds go directly to your Stripe Connect account), and confirm payment outcome. The two layers do not overlap because they trigger on different events: Smart Retries on a failed card charge, Syntharra on an invoice past due.
Migration checkpoints
- Keep Smart Retries enabled at the Stripe Dashboard level.
- Connect QuickBooks Online or Xero to Syntharra for the manual-invoice flow.
- Confirm Stripe Connect is wired — Syntharra never touches the money, but the payment-link UX uses your Stripe account.
- If you have any subscription billing, Smart Retries continues to handle it — Syntharra only triggers on past-due invoices in your accounting system.
What you keep
Stripe Smart Retries, your existing dunning emails inside Stripe, your subscription billing, your saved-card retry intelligence, your hosted Checkout pages — all of it stays. Syntharra adds the call layer for invoices that are not on subscription rails. Different events, different layers, no overlap.
Stripe retries cards. Syntharra calls when there is no card to retry.
