Bill.com alternative for AR collection — Syntharra

Bill.com is a payments and invoicing platform leaning toward AP (paying your bills) more than AR (collecting yours). For SMBs that bought Bill.com primarily for AR but found the collection capability thin or the per-seat pricing painful, here is what to evaluate.

Why people search for an alternative

  • Pricing scales fast — Essentials starts around $45 per user per month and grows from there. For a 5-person AP and AR team, that is $200 or more in fixed monthly cost.
  • The collection tooling is mostly email reminders and a customer payment portal. Voice escalation is not part of the product.
  • Setup time is meaningful — Bill.com has a real onboarding curve, especially around approval workflows. For pure invoice collection, the depth is overkill.
  • AR is a secondary use case in most Bill.com deployments. If you adopted it primarily for AR, you may be paying for AP capabilities you do not use.

What Syntharra replaces — and what it does not

Do not replace Bill.com if you actively use the AP side — bill payment, approval flows, and 1099 reporting work well there. For AR-only needs, Syntharra is significantly cheaper (success-fee at 10 percent of recovered, no monthly) and purpose-built for invoice follow-up. Keep Bill.com for AP if it is working; add Syntharra for AR collection. Or move AR off Bill.com entirely if AR was your primary use case and AP runs through QuickBooks already.

Migration checkpoints

  1. Identify which Bill.com features you actually use — if you pay for AP and AR, only the AR portion is replaceable.
  2. Connect QuickBooks Online or Xero to Syntharra (Bill.com invoice data usually flows back to one of those anyway if your accountant set it up).
  3. Verify Stripe Connect setup — Syntharra routes payments via Stripe; if you currently route through Bill.com Pay, the payment rails change.
  4. Confirm your customer payment-link UX — Syntharra sends a hosted Stripe Checkout URL via SMS, which behaves differently from Bill.com's hosted portal.

What you keep

AP workflows in Bill.com are usually worth keeping if set up well — bill payment, vendor management, approval flows, 1099 reporting. Syntharra has no AP capability and does not pretend to. The two operate on entirely separate domains.

Bill.com for AP. Syntharra for AR collection. Both, or just the one you need.
